When this Raleigh homeowner called us to build a sunroom addition, their treated pine deck was also in need of repairs. They discussed the possibility of using alternative materials that would hold up under the heat and humidity of the southern climate, while providing an outdoor entertaining area. In the South, a shaded deck area is not only functional – it is a very emotional tie to a heritage of warmly welcoming friends and neighbors to their home. Our challenge was to transform a well used treated pine deck into a custom sunroom and Brazilian hardwood deck that would withstand the test of time. We searched for alternative materials for their deck and came up with Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood with the appearance of mahogany. Wrought iron balusters were integrated with the railings to compliment the homeowner’s exterior furnishings. The warm, rich mahogany appearance of the Brazilian hardwood compliments the warmth of the Armstrong flooring in the adjoining sunroom.
